The Manchester CROP Hunger Walk is coming to town on Sunday, October 5, 2014.
What are CROP Hunger Walks?
Neighbors walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world. Different ages, faiths and backgrounds – together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development, as well as local hunger-fighting. Some 2,000 communities across the country take part each year.
What’s the point of walking?
Hungry people in developing countries typically walk as many as six miles a day to get food, water and fuel, and to take their goods to market. We walk to be in solidarity with their struggle for existence. We walk because we want to end hunger – one step at a time.
Where does the money go?
In the last 20 years, CROP Hunger Walks have raised more than $294 million to help people struggling to feed their families – both around the world and around the corner. In fact, 25 percent of the funds raised by CROP Hunger Walks benefit the communities where they take place, by supporting local food banks, pantries, community gardens and other hunger-fighting initiatives. This is why the Community Resource Center is involved. According to recent statistics, more than 400 Michigan hunger agencies received over $407k in funds from local CROP Hunger Walks in 2013. For the past 44 years, CROP Hunger Walks in Michigan have provided $12.9 million in resources for Michigan hunger agencies and over $40 million worldwide for CWS global hunger/poverty programs. Our food pantry benefits from the Manchester CROP Hunger Walk and in turn, our food pantry shoppers benefit. We can help support our food pantry shoppers by participating in the walk on Sunday, October 5, 2014.
